Mount Carmel College, Initium
Mount Carmel College for Women, run by the congregation of the Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa, founded in 1945 in Trichur in the State of Cochin under Madras University, was transferred to Bangalore in 1948. It is a minority institution run primarily for Catholic students but in the spirit of service, it opens its doors to those of all castes and creeds. Initially affiliated to Mysore University, it later became an affiliated college of Bangalore University (1964). An autonomous college since September 2005, Mount Carmel College re-accredited with an A+ by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2006. It is one of the colleges in India selected by UGC under the scheme, College with Potential for Excellence (CPE), in 2006, for a period of three years. The College has been offering degree courses in Arts, Science and Commerce. The results have always been very good with most of them securing distinction and I Class. The strength of the college in 1949 was 200. Today it is 3,500 in the degree classes alone. Mount Carmel College also ventured into the field of post-graduate studies. The college is offering M.Sc courses in Biotechnology and Life Sciences from 2007-2008. The College is also offering one-year PG Diploma in Business Administration, affiliated to Bangalore University, from 2005-06 and Nanotechnology under UGC add-on programme from 2008-09. Mount Carmel College has 26 active clubs and associations, including a vibrant Entrepreneurship Cell.
